MICAIA’s aim is to maximize the opportunity for community equity and impact on livelihoods, and we believe that this will be best achieved by involving community producers in market-oriented enterprises. Across Africa there are tens of thousands of ‘income generating projects’ that produce poor quality products at uncompetitive prices for markets saturated with similar products as well as cheaper well-packaged imports. Such projects do little to transform livelihoods. We need a different approach, one that brings market intelligence and a commitment to building a sustainable enterprise, but that is also committed to pushing as much benefit as possible to community partners. Eco-MICAIA is developing this approach in the following sectors.

Eco-tourism
