Eco-MICAIA Ltd and Tourism

Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of Mozambique’s economy, but to date there has been little opportunity for communities to benefit, especially away from the popular coastal resorts. MICAIA is trying to change this.

First, we’re working with two communities in Manica Province to develop joint ventures in which the community has an active role as well as real equity. These two developments, Ndzou Camp in Moribane Forest, and Binga Camp at the base of Mt Binga are due to open in 2009. These camps will be marketed by Mozambique Eco Tours, a wholly owned subsidiary brand of Eco-MICAIA Ltd. (Click on any of the links for more information)

Secondly, we’re looking more widely at how best to involve more communities in benefiting from tourism e.g. through supplying food to a lodge.
Eco-MICAIA focuses on eco-tourism, defined as environmentally responsible travel to areas of natural beauty and cultural significance that promotes conservation, has a low visitor impact, and provides for beneficial and active involvement of local peoples in the ownership, management and governance of developments. We believe that this approach is particularly appropriate in a Province such as Manica.  CLICK for MAP

Eco-MICAIA stresses the importance of maximising community participation and benefit from tourism. A third guiding priority for Eco-MICAIA is that investment and development must enhance sustainable management of the environment.
